Twin pregnancies are more common, with a reported incidence rate of about 16.1% in China. Twins can be divided into two categories. Double egg twin refers to a twin formed by the fertilization of two eggs separately. It is usually formed when two or more eggs mature and are released during the same ovulation period, and two eggs are fertilized. Monozygotic twins are formed by the division of a fertilized egg into two fetuses, known as monozygotic twins. After division, except for a very small number, embryos can form independent fetuses, which account for about 30% of the total number of twins and are generally constant at around 1:255.
The symptoms and signs include a family history of multiple pregnancies, use of ovulation inducing drugs before pregnancy, and receiving multiple embryo implantation therapy for in vitro fertilization. Clinical manifestations include severe early pregnancy reactions, uterine enlargement that does not match the gestational month, excessive weight gain, and frequent fetal movements. In late pregnancy, excessive uterine dilation increases the feeling of abdominal heaviness. At the same time, the high pressure of the diaphragm forces the heart and lungs, causing difficulty breathing. Due to obstruction of venous return, high edema and varicose veins may occur in the lower limbs and perineum. After mid-term pregnancy, if the uterus enlarges beyond the corresponding gestational month, the abdomen may touch small limbs or two or more fetal poles in multiple places. After 3 months of pregnancy and 5 months of pregnancy, two fetal hearts can be heard using Doppler and fetal heart stethoscope, respectively.
Simply put, twin pregnancy is twins. Twin pregnancy requires more nutrition than usual and carries higher risks than ordinary pregnant women, so extra attention should be paid to twin pregnancy. After confirming a twin pregnancy, it is essential to undergo regular prenatal check ups and observe the baby's development to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby. If necessary, the pregnancy may be terminated or relevant medications may be taken to alleviate the symptoms.
