What to do with oligohydramnios in the third trimester of diabetes

During pregnancy, amniotic fluid is an essential component for maintaining the baby's life. Both too much and too little amniotic fluid will affect the development of the fetus. If amniotic fluid is too little in the late pregnancy, it will increase the risk of fetal malformation. When the pregnant mother suffers from diabetes, the amniotic fluid volume may be at an abnormal level. The common symptom is that amniotic fluid is too much, but there are also cases of too little amniotic fluid. What should we do if amniotic fluid is too little in the late pregnancy of diabetes?

  1. Firstly, it is necessary to understand when the amniotic fluid value is considered insufficient. The total amniotic fluid volume in the four quadrants of a normal pregnant woman in the late stage of pregnancy should be between 8-20cm. When the amniotic fluid volume is below 8cm but greater than 5cm, it is considered oligohydramnios, and below 5cm is called oligohydramnios. When the total volume exceeds 20cm, it is considered polyhydramnios. Diabetes in the third trimester leads to less amniotic fluid. First, take water therapy. Pregnant women need to ensure that the daily water consumption is more than 2000ml. Drinking a lot of water can increase the amniotic fluid volume. If the effect of drinking water therapy is not obvious, pregnant women can be hospitalized for rehydration treatment. Because the probability of fetal malformation in diabetes pregnant women is higher than that in normal pregnant women, it is recommended that pregnant women first do B-ultrasound to check whether the fetus is deformed.

  2. It is suggested that patients with diabetes during pregnancy should pay attention to their daily diet, control their blood sugar level, control nutrition input in early pregnancy, and increase protein and vitamin supplementation when they need more energy in late pregnancy on the premise of ensuring their own and fetal nutrition. In addition, pregnant women should pay attention to monitoring their weight, and it is recommended that they control their weight gain within 6-8 kg during pregnancy.
