Different manifestations of separation anxiety in young children1

  1. Physical discomfort. Some children may experience physical discomfort when separated from their parents, with headaches and stomach pain being the most common problems for children. Many parents are actually unaware that this condition is actually a manifestation of separation anxiety, but rather very nervous.

  2. Crying and fussing. After being separated from their parents, children may not adapt to the environment in kindergarten and may experience serious crying, some even shouting and throwing things. These are all separation anxiety disorders caused by the inability to adapt to separation from parents.

  3. Fear mentality. Children who separate from their parents may experience severe fear, such as being afraid of the dark, being alone, or being afraid of strangers. These are all forms of safety for separation anxiety, and there is no need to be overly nervous.

  4. Not sociable. Some children who leave their parents in kindergarten behave particularly unsociable, unwilling to play with the children, unwilling to speak, showing indifference, and not adapting.

  5. Fasting. Some children, in order to prevent their parents from sending them to unfamiliar kindergartens, even go on a hunger strike and refuse to eat, thinking that this can avoid going to kindergarten and separation.

  6. Later onset. Some children do not experience any crying when they first arrive at kindergarten, but are enthusiastic. However, as time goes by, kindergarten becomes less fresh, so crying may occur and they are unwilling to stay in kindergarten anymore. This is also the insurance for separation anxiety.
