Many mothers may find that their baby's complexion is always paler than other babies, and only after going to the hospital for examination do they realize that their baby is anemic. Anemia can lead to delayed growth and inability to concentrate in babies, so parents should seek medical attention promptly if they notice a condition similar to anemia in their babies. So, how can baby anemia be detected?
1. Symptoms of pale skin and mucous membranes
The most prominent manifestation of a baby is pale skin, especially on the face, lips, earlobes, palms, and nail beds. The conjunctiva and oral mucosa also appear pale due to the presence of abundant capillaries in these areas, which are distributed superficially. When a baby is anemic, red blood cells and hemoglobin will significantly decrease, and the blood color will become lighter, making it easy to appear in these areas.
2. Symptoms related to malnutrition
Babies with long-term anemia generally have poor physical development, shorter stature compared to their peers, dislike playing, and are prone to fatigue. Due to malnutrition, the skin elasticity is relatively poor, the nail development is poor, the texture is brittle, and there may be horizontal stripes. At the same time, the hair is relatively dry, the hair color is yellow, and there is no luster.
3. Performance of the circulatory and respiratory systems
When a baby is anemic, there will be a lack of oxygen in the blood, which can cause an increase in heart rate and respiratory movement of the lungs. This phenomenon is called compensation, which has a limited degree. If the anemia symptoms continue to worsen, the compensation function will be disrupted, leading to heart enlargement and, in severe cases, heart failure in the baby.
4. Other symptoms: lack of energy, drowsiness, restlessness, inability to concentrate, loss of appetite, indigestion, nausea, aplastic anemia, etc.
