A newborn baby may have watery stool, which sometimes makes it difficult for parents to distinguish whether the baby has normal bowel movements or diarrhea. So, what is diarrhea for a baby?

In general, if a baby has diarrhea, it will increase their daily bowel movements. If the baby has only mild diarrhea, the stool is yellow green, looks like Egg&vegetable soup and has diarrhea. If the baby has moderate diarrhea, they may defecate ten times a day, with a sour and smelly stool that is relatively thin. If the baby has severe diarrhea, they may defecate fifteen times a day and also show obvious discomfort on their face.

So why does the baby have diarrhea?

  1. Whether the baby's digestive system function is perfect or not, there may be intolerance to some foods. Mothers should add new foods to the baby during the feeding process, preferably gradually increasing the amount to avoid serious diarrhea.

  2. Diarrhea caused by infection. Some babies have a weaker ability to resist viruses, and during seasonal changes, they may experience problems with viral infections, such as rotavirus infection.

  3. It may be due to ingestion of spoiled food or improper eating, eating too much cold food or alternating cold and hot foods, which can also easily lead to diarrhea.

  4. Intestinal problems. Some babies have weaker digestive systems, and exposure to antibiotics and other medications can cause dysbiosis of the microbiota, leading to diarrhea.
