For newborns, due to the incomplete development of the gastrointestinal tract and the relatively small stomach capacity, they will be fed more frequently. If parents adopt formula feeding, they should be fed every 2 to 3 hours. If breastfeeding is adopted, there is no limit to the length of each feeding, and the principle of frequent feeding and on-demand feeding is implemented.

The amount of infant formula needed for newborns should generally be calculated based on the weight of the newborn baby in kilograms. Approximately 100 to 200 milliliters of infant formula should be given daily. However, since infant formula is not as beneficial for digestion and absorption as breast milk, it is necessary to mix it with water when brewing infant formula for newborns. The best water ratio is generally 2:1, but depending on the physical condition of the newborn, water ratios of 4:1, 3:1, and 3:2 can also be used.

Therefore, if the weight measured at birth of a newborn is 3 kilograms, the required amount of milk is 3 kilograms multiplied by 100 or 120 milliliters to obtain 300 or 360 milliliters of milk. After adding water, the total amount of milk can be prepared, and then divided by the number of servings. For example, when brewing milk powder, a 2:1 ratio of water is used, which means adding 150 or 160 milliliters of water to 300 or 360 milliliters of milk, the total amount of milk is 450 to 480 milliliters long, divided into 7 to 8 doses, so each meal is 60 to 70 milliliters.
