How to determine if a baby has inhaled a foreign object1

  1. Foreign body in the throat: When the baby is not holding the foreign body, they may experience severe coughing or hoarse voice. If a foreign object gets stuck in the baby's voiceprint, the baby may also experience a bluish complexion and even suffocation. At this time, mothers must promptly send their babies to the hospital for treatment and not handle them on their own to avoid causing more serious harm.

  2. Inhalation of large foreign objects: When babies inhale large foreign objects, they may experience shortness of breath, vomiting, and in severe cases, even difficulty breathing. Babies under the age of 4 may have impaired swallowing function when using nuts, which can easily lead to foreign objects getting stuck and abandoning the tube. To prevent such incidents from happening, it is best for mothers not to play with their babies while they are eating.

  3. Inhalation of Small Foreign Bodies: When a baby inhales a relatively small foreign body, the main manifestation is during normal breathing, where the foreign body will collide with the glottis as the airflow rises. At this point, the mother can hear the baby's breathing sound as if it were a tapping sound, indicating that a smaller foreign object has been lodged in the baby's throat.
