Pediatric hydrocele can be classified based on physiological anatomical location, as well as the cause and specific course of the disease. In clinical practice, hydrocele can be divided into four categories: spermatic cord hydrocele, testicular hydrocele, spermatic cord testicular hydrocele, and communicating hydrocele. These four different types of hydrocele have significant differences, and their clinical symptoms also vary greatly.

Hydrocele is actually formed during fetal development. During embryonic development, there is a pocket like protrusion in the groin called the peritoneal sheath. Under normal circumstances, as the fetus continues to develop, the peritoneal sheath process will gradually close. Some fetuses have unclosed peritoneal sheath like processes, which eventually lead to the formation of hydrocele.

The incidence rate of hydrocele in children is relatively high in surgical outpatient department, which is also called "water hernia" by doctors. Most babies' hydrocele does not require treatment, as long as there are no obvious symptoms on the body, no treatment is needed and the fluid can slowly absorb on its own. In cases where self-healing is not possible, surgery can be used for treatment.
