Symptoms of pertussis in children1

Pertussis is caused by Bordetella pertussis, and the disease is divided into three stages with different symptoms at each stage. After being infected with Bordetella pertussis, the child will have a latent period of about two weeks. After entering the prodromal period, the child will experience symptoms similar to a cold, mainly including coughing, runny nose, sneezing, and accompanied by fever. Coughing at night is more severe than during the day.

After the condition enters the spastic phase, the child will experience spasmodic cough, which is paroxysmal and lasts for about 2-6 weeks, and may even last for more than two months. Along with coughing, the child will also have an inspiratory roar, similar to the crowing of a chicken. Due to severe coughing, it may also cause facial eyelid edema.

After the patient enters the recovery period, the crowing sound of the rooster gradually disappears and the cough gradually stops. But this disease can cause some other complications, such as pneumonia, atelectasis, etc., which may last for several months and even persist without recovery. At present, the country has developed a vaccine for this disease, and everyone can receive the vaccine to prevent it.
