The causes of cerebral palsy in newborns are quite complex, mainly due to genetic and acquired factors. Acquired factors can be divided into three aspects: prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal. The genetic factors mentioned here mainly refer to those with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or intellectual disabilities in the family, which increase the probability of cerebral palsy. However, most cerebral palsy is caused by non genetic factors, so it is only necessary to do pre pregnancy and prenatal examinations to prevent its occurrence.
There are two factors that can cause cerebral palsy in newborns before birth. One is the quality of the fertilized embryo, which means that both or one of the parents had poor lifestyle habits before pregnancy, resulting in poor quality of sperm or eggs, which can affect the quality of the embryo. The other is that the mother was infected, poisoned, or exposed to radiation in early pregnancy, which can lead to poor development of fetal brain cells. There are also two factors during the perinatal period. On the one hand, premature birth in newborns can easily lead to cerebral palsy due to incomplete brain development.
On the other hand, if the mother gives birth urgently, by suction, or by forceps, it may cause intracranial hemorrhage in the newborn, or if the delivery time is too long, the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck, or the fetus inhales meconium, causing hypoxia in the fetal brain. Both of these situations may lead to cerebral palsy sequelae. Factors in the neonatal period include infection, severe asphyxia, brain trauma, hemorrhagic disease, etc. after birth, which can cause damage to the newborn's brain and lead to cerebral palsy symptoms.
