What is the reason why an 8-month-old baby vomits while breastfeeding

Due to incomplete gastrointestinal development, newborn babies may experience vomiting while feeding. Generally speaking, the vomiting of milk in babies will improve after 3 months. If a baby frequently vomits milk after half a year old, parents need to take it seriously. So, what is the reason why an 8-month-old baby vomits while breastfeeding?

Some 8-month-old babies vomit milk while breastfeeding because their stomach capacity is relatively small and horizontal, with a wider connection to the esophagus and a tighter connection to the small intestine. Moreover, infants often inhale air while feeding, which can cause milk to flow back into the mouth and lead to vomiting. This is only caused by physiological reasons and does not mean that the baby's physical functions are problematic.

If the baby has no abnormal condition after spitting milk, it usually doesn't need to be taken seriously. Sometimes the milk vomited by a baby may appear as tofu residue due to a reaction with stomach acid, but this is a normal phenomenon and there is no need to worry. However, if a baby frequently spits milk and the liquid they vomit is yellow green or brown, or accompanied by symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, they should seek medical attention promptly.

When breastfeeding, do not place the baby flat. Instead, tilt the baby at an angle of about 45 degrees to allow the liquid in the stomach to naturally flow into the small intestine, which can reduce the risk of vomiting compared to placing it flat. After feeding, keep the baby upright, lean on their shoulders, and gently pat their back to help them expel air from their stomach through hiccups. It is not recommended to immediately let the baby lie on their back after breastfeeding. It is recommended to lie on their side for a period of time.
