Family’s Bulldog Undergoes Surgery to Have 19 Pacifiers Removed From His Stomach

Guess that’s where all those missing pacifiers have been hiding.

One Boston family recently cracked the case on their baby’s missing pacifiers. Although it seemed like they were disappearing into thin air, the true culprit was none other than Mortimer, the family bulldog. The 3-year-old beloved pet had to undergo surgery to remove 19 pacifiers from his stomach, a press release from the veterinary hospital explains.

Suspicions first arose in the spring, when Emily Shanahan rushed Mortimer to the vet after he randomly began to vomit. The dog was diagnosed with a vomiting syndrome that the vets hoped would improve with medicine, the news release explains. As time passed, symptoms only worsened, and the family started to suspect something larger was at play.

Never did Shanahan think she’d find her kids’ pacifiers at the root of the problem. X-rays eventually confirmed Mrotimer had been eating her kids’ pacifiers, thus causing the dog to have stomach issues.

“It’s likely that Mortimer started nabbing these pacifiers in April, perhaps one at a time, and that started a cycle of nausea and vomiting, which are symptoms that can be caused by so many other health issues,” says Dr. Erika De Papp, veterinarian at Angell Animal Medical Center. “If not for the urgency with which his family pursued veterinary care, things would have gotten much worse for him.”

All of the pacifiers were removed from Mortimer’s stomach earlier this month, and the pup is already starting to act like his usual self, according to the family.
